AFRL viewing aircraft inspections through the lens of technology
AFRL Materials and Manufacturing Directorate researchers Capt. Sarah Wallentine and Alex Brown demonstrate the use of augmented reality for nondestructive inspections. AFRL researchers are developing a capability that uses the technology to display all necessary information for performing an aircraft inspection within the user's field of view, eliminating the need to view information from multiple sources simultaneously. AFLCMC NDI goes digital on aircraft inspections: saves money, improves operations for Air Force
Kevin McClain, contract nondestructive testing instructor, explains how to clear a jammed image scanner from a computed radiography system to visiting Nondestructive Inspection Instructor, Tech. Sgt. Matthew Barnes (left); Tech. Sgt. Clifford Daniels, Military NDI Instructor supervisor (rear); and Bobby Britton, Civilian NDI Instructor supervisor (seated) during instructor qualification training held at the 359th Training Squadron Detachment One at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida Jan. 24, 2018. New digital technology will replace the X-ray film used by NDI technicians over the next several years and impact every airframe the Air Force flies, saving money, reducing hazardous materials and improving operational capabilities. AFLCMC NDI goes digital on aircraft inspections: saves money, improves operations for Air Force
Air Force Life Cycle Management Center Materials Engineer Ernesto Nieto positions an imaging plate from a computed radiography system during a pre-production test of the equipment at the 138th Fighter Wing at Tulsa Air National Guard Base, Oklahoma. The system, now proven to meet Air Force requirements and adopted, is expected to replace all legacy film-based X-ray nondestructive inspections in the service within the next five years.
